20 miles north from Bucharest is the island monastery of Snagov, traditionally held to be the burial site of Vlad Tepes. Located in the middle of a lake, it is only accessible by boat.

According to some historical accounts, Dracula’s headless body was taken to the monastery and buried in front of the altar. The spot is clearly marked with a small portrait of Vlad, and a vase of fresh flowers – Vlad is still revered by Romanians as a national hero.

The site was excavated in 1931 by Rosetti & Florescu, with no result. A body was found near the entrance of the chapel, though positive identification was difficult since the body has disappeared.
